Regional Airports ensure continuity of international flight operations during adverse weather

Adverse weather conditions affected the southern part of the country yesterday, disrupting international flight operations at Keflavík Airport. As a result, seventeen aircraft were diverted to the international-capable regional airports in Reykjavík, Akureyri, and Egilsstaðir, demonstrating their critical role when conditions make it impossible to land in Keflavík.

The staff of Isavia Regional Airports are trained to remain prepared at all times and to respond effectively to situations such as those experienced yesterday, which affected around two thousand passengers who have now reached their destinations. A professional response to unexpected circumstances is at the core of their preparation and training.

Staff worked extended shifts to accommodate international aircraft alongside domestic, medical, and emergency flights simultaneously. Close cooperation between airport services and air traffic control was crucial in managing the situation and proved essential when three aircraft were accommodated in Egilsstaðir, eight in Akureyri, and six at Reykjavík City Airport.
